LONDON, Ontario – King College Women’s Wrestling traveling across international lines to the Canadian province of Ontario to participate in one of the host nation’s most cherished tournaments, the Harry Geris Memorial International Women’s Wrestling Duals. The tournament was an all-day event that took place on Saturday, Nov. 19, where King displayed brilliance on the mats to take the gold medal with an undefeated performance against some of North America’s best in the sport.

The Tornado opened the tournament with a steep challenge, facing off against the reigning Canadian National champions, the University of Alberta, in their first match. King defeated the Pandas by a score of 22-13, in one of King’s most competitive matches of the year. No. 1 Emily Martin began the dual with a win by a decisive win by decision but the team win was solidified by Kayla Brendlinger (Slippery Rock, Penn.), Julie Salata (Canton, Mich.), Sarah Hildebrandt (Granger, Ill.) and Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) winning consecutive bouts to close out the match. Brendlinger and Salata each won by pinning their opponent in the first period while Hildebrandt and Ragan each won by decision. Ragan shut out her opponent, 3-0 and 2-0. King defeated the defending National Champions, 22-13, to advance them in pool play.

King handled their next two opponents in pool play with ease, defeating nationally-ranked Lindenwood University, 26-9, followed by a 34-2 victory over McMaster University. Over the two duals, King recorded five pins, two by Lorrie Ramos and another pair by Brendlinger.

After advancing out of pool play and placed into the semifinal round, the Tornado paired up with host school Western Ontario University who finished runner up in a separate pool. King handled Western Ontario, 27-4, with the Tornado winning all but one bout in the matchup. Emily Martin, Lorrie Ramos and Alli Ragan all recorded pins over their opponents and all within 90 seconds of the start of the bout.

King advanced to the championship round to meet No. 3 Simon Fraser University, who King narrowly defeated 22-20 in their dual on Oct. 9. King and Simon Fraser traded win through the first four bouts with all matches being won by decision. King ran away with the team victory by winning the final four bouts with the backend coming through in a big way. Hildebrandt, Salata, Brendlinger and Ragan won in consecutive matches to help the Tornado to a 23-9 win and the tournament championship.

Alli Ragan, Sam Klingel, Emily Martin and Kayla Brendlinger all went undefeated in the day’s events. Ragan was also named Most Outstanding American Wrestler after tournament’s end.

The Tornado improve to 14-1 in dual meets this season after posting a 5-0 record on Saturday. In their 14 wins this season, they have outscored the competition 487-94.

The Harry Geris Women’s Wrestling Duals features the top women’s wrestling teams from Canada and the United States. The event is named after Harry Geris, a London wrestling icon who was a former coach with the University of Western Ontario and the London-Western wrestling program.

This is the fourth annual Harry Geris Memorial Women’s Wrestling Duals and is the first time that the competition will be held in his hometown of London, Ontario. Geris coached with the Western Mustangs and its affiliated club, the London-Western Wrestling Club before passing away suddenly of heart failure in 2008.

Geris was a three-time wrestling Olympian for Canada. He was inducted into Wrestling Canada’s Hall of Fame and the USA Junior College Hall of Fame as well as London Sports Hall of Fame. He was a U.S. Junior College champion while wrestling at Joliet Junior College (Ill.) and a NCAA All-American while at Oklahoma State University in the early 1970s.

King will rest for the duration of the month and return to the mats on Dec. 3 for the Cumberland Duals, held in Williamsburg, Kentucky. It will be their last meet prior to the team’s preparation for the U.S. Senior Nationals (Dec. 17) and the NWCA National Duals (Dec. 17), held at King College.

OCU upholds No. 1 ranking vs. other top four teams

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University walloped highly-ranked competition, routing Cumberlands (Ky.) 44-3, King (Tenn.) 31-10 and Simon Fraser (British Columbia) 44-3 on Sunday at Abe Lemons Arena.

The three-time defending Women’s College Wrestling Association and four-time NWCA National Duals champion Stars improved to 7-0 in duals. No. 1-ranked OCU knocked off second-ranked Simon Fraser, third-ranked Cumberlands and No. 4 King. OCU improved to 58-0-1 in its last 59 duals.

“We had an exceptional day today,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “We wrestled well without having our entire lineup intact. We expect to have our full lineup in the next couple of weeks, and that will make a difference. We came up ahead on all the critical situations. We won the close ones.” Emily Webster, a freshman from Sedalia, Mo., became the OCU wrestler of the day after defeating Simon Fraser’s Daphne-Ann Hodgson, the top-ranked 101-pounder in America, and Cumberlands’ Opelia Felipe, who was No. 2. Webster checked in at No. 8 in the first 101-pound rankings of the season. “Emily Webster beating No. 1 and No. 2 was awesome,” Randall said. “It should put her at No. 1. We had a couple who were backups last year who stepped up today. Audrey Morehouse went 4-0. Demi Strub beat two all-Americans. There’s plenty of time for improvement. We’re progressing at the right pace right now. We have a long ways to go.”

Against the 2011 WCWA runner-up Simon Fraser, OCU notched seven falls. The Stars’ pins came from Kristi Garr at 109, Michaela Hutchison at 123, Morehouse at 130, Amanda Hendey at 136, Kristie Davis at 155, Brittney Roberts at 170 and Brittany Delgado at 191.

Against King, Davis, Delgado and Webster picked up falls. Delgado’s fall over Kerri Bumpers came in nine seconds. Delgado holds OCU’s record for the fastest fall with an eight-second pin against Evanie Paulett of Lindenwood (Mo.) on Nov. 13, 2009.

Against Cumberlands, OCU benefited from six falls and two forfeits. Joey Miller at 116, Tessa Plana at 143, Davis, Garr, Hutchison and Webster stuck falls for the Stars.

The Stars face fifth-ranked Lindenwood and Waldorf (Iowa) in duals starting 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 at Abe Lemons Arena.

After a phenomenal first season with King College’s women’s wrestling team, sophomore Alli Ragan has definitely made a name for herself in women’s wrestling. Representing the United States at the Junior World Championships in Bucarest, Romania, Ragan defeated Klaudia Pilipczuk of Poland 1-0, 3-0 to take the bronze medal.

The Romanian Wrestling Federation hosted this year’s Junior World Championships, sponsored by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA). Participation in Freestyle, Greco Roman, and Women Wrestling was open to all national wrestling federations associated with FILA. Representatives from 56 countries competed in this year’s championship tournament.

Of the 54 countries represented in the women’s division of the tournament, the United States tied for 2nd place with Russia, while Japan took 1st and China 4th.

Ragan competed at the 63kg (139 lb) weight class. There were 16 other countries represented in her weight including Russia, Japan, Bulgaria, and China.

“We are so proud of Alli,” said Jason Moorman, head coach for women’s wrestling at King College. “This is the first World medal for King. Only one person in the country earns the spot to compete for the U.S. at 63kg in the Junior World Championships, and this year it was Alli. She has done a tremendous job representing both our program, King College, and the United States.”

Ragan, who hails from Carbondale, Ill., had an outstanding freshman year, finishing 3rd at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) International Open, 2nd at the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) Nationals, and 3rd at U.S. Senior Championships. She was also the University Nationals Champion and Body Bar Women’s National Champion. Her Body Bar win sealed her spot in the Junior World tournament.

“Alli set a goal to make King College history by adding a Junior World Medal to her list of accomplishments this season,” said Moorman. “It is wonderful to see that goal become reality!”
